Kevin's Korner

What are you willing to do for the Gospel?  In his first letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul says, "For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them.  To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews.  To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law.  To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law.  To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak.  I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some.  I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings."
I find it interesting to hear church people say, "I am an advocate for the youth."  They are saying that they are willing to throw their weight/influence behind the cause of the youth.  Some say, "I am and advocate for missions."  They are willing to use their influence to encourage mission support, and help people in foreign lands.  Some say, "I am an advocate for senior citizens" (or children, or the environment, etc.).  All these people are willing to use whatever power and influence that they have to help protect or to further a cause.
A lot of church people find themselves as advocates for various causes.  Jesus, himself said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good

news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."  Jesus is saying that he is an advocate for the poor, the captives, the blind and oppressed, in other words, the outcasts.
What I'm getting at is that church people tend to be advocates for a lot of causes.  But very few choose to be advocates for the non-Christian.  Who is willing to watch out on Sunday morning for the person who doesn't look like he/she belongs?  Who is willing to watch for the person who doesn't know his/her way around the church, or any church on Sunday morning?  Who is willing to especially watch for the person with the "wrong clothes," "wrong language," "wrong manners?"  Who is willing to watch during the week for those people who don't act or look like Christians?  Who is willing to be an advocate for the unchurched?
Paul was willing to become all things in order to reach all people.  It didn't matter what they looked like or talked like, or where they lived.  Paul went where the unchurched people were, so that he could reach those people and tell them about the good news of God's love.  He was an advocate for these people, and for the cause of the Gospel.  I'm looking for advocates for the people who are not yet part of our church, who don't yet know about God's love, who are not being loved yet by Christ's church.  I'm looking for advocates for the Gospel.  Actually, God is looking for advocates, who want to walk in Jesus' and Paul's footsteps.  But, I'm looking too.  Let me know if you might be one, or become one.
